"We must wait until we have learned by experience -perhaps cruel experience- to trust in the state a little less and in mankind a little more." Frederic Bastiat, The Law, 1848.

Photo collection from Digne-les-Bains, administrative capital of the Alpes de Haute Provence and from the country side called "Dignois", Southern France, in fall 2000. Some photos from a hike from the village Courbons (env. 900m) to la Gomberge (1430m), dénivelée 530m and from an excursion to the villages Clouet, le Cognet and Lambert in the valley Galabre, pays Dignois. Not the usual tourist photos - just a few impressions from a scrutinizer.

1
Digne-Les-Bains, Ville fleurie, trois etoilles *** - three star flower city with three stars. 17000 inhabitants.
2
Vue sur la contruction des HLM (lodging for moderated rent aka supported by the public, i.e. the tax payer). View to the western part of Digne-les-Bains to the construction zone with state aided housing projects.
3
Seen in October 2000, directly to the left of the "Digne-les-Bains - Village Fleurie" sign at the western entry of the city. A blantant contradiction to their three flowers "Laureat".
4
These two pictures were taken in late summer 2000. I have been informed that this waste area was finally cleared in January 2001. (En francais: Il n'y a plus de decharge a cote de la route a l'entree de la ville; ca a ete nettoye en Janvier 2001.)
5
Activitees Appasse (Association pour la Promotion des Actions Sociales et Education). The French love acronyms.
6
Very funny housing construction, marked "Decouverte, loisir, animation" (exploration, leasure, animation) - a public service.
7
A chapelle on a hill West to the city center
8
9
in very bad shape
10
with growing distance, the chapelle looks better ;-)
11
Le Plan d'Eau à Digne-les-Bains
12
The public swimming pool located on the southern end of Digne-les-Bains. Free entry
13
The Plan d'Eau is located near the museum of Alexandra-David Neel (unfortunately, last time I checked in 07-Apr-2003, I found this website "unable" to say the least. at the entry page you see nothing without JavaScript being enabled; concerning JavaScript and surfing security see www.nioba.com) the famous Asia explorer who lived 40 years in Digne-les-Bains. Their website needs some work to make it more accessible. The museum is worth a visit; the entry and the guided tour is free and takes about 90 minutes.
14
A church on top of a hill West of the city center
15
is not in better shape than the chapelle above
16
Adopt a high-way - well high-way is an exuberant exaggeration. Seen at the border of the road from La Javie village to Digne
17
Lavender fields, about 5 km south of Digne
18
Sommet de Cousson (1516m), dominating Digne, viewed from the south
19
20
View from the tower in the Courbons village
21
View from la Gomberge mountain (1430m) with the Blayeul mountain summit (2180m)
22
The Courbons village
23
Natural lime-sinter-terraces in Digne at the Centre Geologique in East-Digne.
24
Stone-covered water fountain in the gology center
25
Champignon du Bitumen Dignois, seen at the bord of the road in the Galabre valley
26
The Galabre creek
27
The master's office of the Clouet village
28
Paintings on the wall: the public school in the Clouet village
28
An autumnal tree in Digne at the board of the river Bès - with the solid blue sky (le ciel bleu dur)
